Team Rev Recap: Jan 26 – Feb 1
There is much to mention from last week. Indoor spin continued. Our elite race team spent the weekend training together in Tennessee in preparation for the start of their race season in two weeks at Valley of the Sun. Dessa completed a (mostly) indoor century ride on Sunday to ensure her inclusion in the Century of the Month club for 2009. Kate began to organize Team Revolution’s Tour de Cure team via the forum. Steph let you know about our upcoming technique clinic at the end of the month and reminded you about the maintenance clinic scheduled for Friday evening. We rode indoors and outdoors. On the roads and the trails. On trainers and rollers. Solo and together. I could tell you about any of this.
But instead I’m going to tell you about Frostbike. Because our Frostbike Series has officially come to a close. And, it was pretty cool.
35 women of varying ages and abilities participated in the first annual Frostibke Winter Ride Series. The premise was simple, pay $50 for the four week series and then come meet us at Velocity on Saturdays and/or Sundays to ride 15 miles regardless of the weather. Each week that you ride, you get $10 back. Ride all 4 weeks to earn a limited edition Frostbike Series tee-shirt. 22 women made it to each ride weekend! Our hats (and helmets) go off to you!!!
During Frostbike, we encountered well-below freezing temps, nasty wind, snow and ice. There were a few sunny days, too. And while the weather would seem to be the most distinctive feature of the series, it wasn’t. Instead, I would say Frostbike felt remarkable because of the camaraderie and pride among our participants. Frostbike became something far bigger than what it was in its conception. I guess it’s because when you do something that feels a little bit crazy (like riding road bikes in the snow!), you can’t help but feel connected to those crazy enough to tackle the challenge along with you.
We want to extend our sincere thanks to John Cozad and everyone else at Velocity for hosting the series and offering a bike shop and café discount to our participants. Even though Frostbike has ended, expect to continue to see us often. In fact, with a Sunday brunch that includes buttermilk waffles, croque monsieur, acorn squash, southern biscuits and roasted potatoes, I can pretty much guarantee you won’t be able to keep us away. Yum! And thanks!
