Frostbike: Test of Wills

[ 5 ] January 26, 2009 |

It has been cold before. Precip however, has never been encountered by the Frostbike riders. What Mike Roberts predicted to be flurries turned out to be a little more substantial. (Turned out to be a fluffy layer of pretty white stuff dumped seemingly–beautifully–all at once.)

Was an eye batted by a Frostbike series member? Heck no! “Watch out for the slick painted surfaces” was the warning called out by Steph, our fearless leader. That being said, we trudged bravely from the warm confines of Velocity Café out into the frozen tundra of Forest Park. I wondered to myself…Was the yellow paint more slippery than the white? We headed bravely down snow-covered DeBaliviere.

I was really glad that I had opted for the mountain bike today and felt a certain pity for those on the skinny wheeled road bikes. Pam had a regular ski slope built up in front of her front brakes. Kube wiped out on the turn by the Planetarium. I believe Jessi bit it somewhere along the way too. Did anyone cry or whine? No. This was not a bunch of candy a##es. This was the elite corps known as the Frostbike Series riders. Some motorists even threw their hands up in disbelief that we were actually riding our bikes in this weather. If they only knew the fun we were having!

Cheers to the Will of the Frostbikers. We earned our t-shirts today. Rev on.

I second Traci’s request for pics. If anyone has good pics of the weekend’s weather–and consequently riders conquering it (or attempting to), please send them to me: chris (at) stlrevolution (dot) com.

  4. [...] The eye candy for today is actually from last Sunday, when Anne rode the third weekend of Frost Bike and I tagged along.  Today’s header was shot after the ride.  It shows my bike glasses, sitting on the dashboard of my car, checkout the full story here.  My bike glasses are sports glasses from bollé, they have an outer wraparound lens and a prescription insert.  As you can, some of the snow that fell got stuck in between the two lenses, filling the bottom third of the lens.  The droplets above the snow came from road salt spray.  I should have had the bike fenders on that day.  The picture with today’s post, I shot of myself.  I really did look and feel like the Abominable Snowman.  Believe me I was as cold as I look.  Soon after shooting this photo, I bagged it and headed back to the car.  Here is the official description of the ride.
