Wheels of Glory
Since my fairly “loose” training schedule allows for quite a bit of leeway, I opted to participate in Tuesday evening’s “Wheels of Glory” race at the Atomic Cowboy. Not knowing what to expect, I packed my cycling shoes, riding shorts, jersey, doo rag, and tennis shoes (in case there were cages).
What I wore to the race was a pair of jeans, undershirt, sweater, and my mules.
What I raced in was my jeans, undershirt, jersey(for pr), doo rag, and my mules.
How great is that?
This was a race where spandex was shunned. The two riders who wore it were viewed as “show offs” by the other cyclists decked out in denim, t-shirts, Vans, and studded belts.
Weight and aerodynamics were not an issue here. Drops or hoods? Just a matter of preference.
Bike fit? One size fits all.
I did not spot a bottle of Gatorade, Clif bar, GU, or even water.
The pre-race fare here was PBR and tortilla chips. In my 11 month racing career, I have enjoyed many a beer after the race, but this was the first time I can recall ever tipping a couple before the race.
What about the bikes?
Vintage 80’s road bikes. Carbon was just an element on the periodic table when these bikes were rolling down the road.
The race? Two cyclists side by side in an all out 3 minute sprint. Graphics of “virtual” cyclists mimicking their cycling motions as they rode through what looked to be the Alps. The top 10 out of 30 moved onto the finals. The process of elimination continued until a winner was determined.
Did I win? No.
Did I make it to the finals? No.
Did I have fun? Heck yes!
